INSIDER TRADING MEETUP V : Photographing From the Very Large to the Very Small:  Alaskan Glaciers to DNA Molecules.

  • 722 Sumner Spring Lane (map)

Our INSIDER TRADING series are designed for in-person skill and knowledge sharing. Each meetup narrows in on a specific area of expertise along with an accomplished ambassador. Our guest begins by introducing themself and their work. The second half is open to the natural evolution of particular questions and conversation. In the end, we hope to leave with a little more insight and courage. Please join us for our upcoming edition to welcome local scientist and photographer, Jack Griffith.

As a graduate student at Caltech in the 1960’s, Jack developed the methods for visualizing DNA molecules with the electron microscope and over the following decades at the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center he and his group have used this technology to photograph DNAs undergoing events crucial for the life of our cells. He is also an avid personal photographer employing 35mm, medium and large format cameras. He has published over 2000 individual images in scientific journals, and his images have graced 43 journal covers and several book covers.  He was awarded the Progress Award by the Photographic Society of America in 2023 for his work photographing DNA, an award presented previously to Ansel Adams, Jacques Cousteau, and Edward Steichen among others.

Jack’s talk will provide stories of how photographing DNA in action has helped forged our current understanding of molecular biology with each story framed with photographs of people, large cats, Alaskan glaciers and more.

INSIDER TRADING meetups are sliding scale fees — if you can, please consider contributing to help PHOTO FARM’s mission. One RSVP per vehicle is required; each individual in the vehicle does not have to RSVP separately. Parking is finite; please carpool.
