Analog Photo II: fine tuning

  • 722 Sumner Spring Lane Chapel Hill (map)

Join Analog Photo II and fine tune your black and white printing skills. Learn how to dodge, burn and employ split toning. Many of you may already be familiar with these concepts from Photoshop or Lightroom, but don’t know how to translate that understanding into a wet darkroom practice. Dodging and burning are invaluable techniques for controlling the exposure in select areas of your print. Split toning helps you control the shadows in your print separately from your highlights. These tools will grant you greater control and precision to create gelatin silver prints that sing.

On day 1 we learn age-old strategies for making sophisticated darkroom prints. We discuss “thin” and “dense” negatives. We consider tonal values and contrast and learn varied techniques for optimizing your negatives. On day 2, students continue to work on their craft in an Open Studio+ format, printing in the darkroom with hands-on instruction.

Please bring your B+W (35mm or medium format) negatives to the workshop. RC paper is provided. Analog Photo I, CRASH COURSE, or equivalent experience are pre-requisites for this course.
